CULTURE & HISTOIRE

Dominica has a rich cultural diversity rooted in African tradition. Creole music, with its roots in the French Creole language, was born in Dominica, and is based on rhythmic African musical patterns. Dancers, storytellers, artists and musicians are in abundance in every village, with regular performances all over the island, especially during Creole week and Independance day celebrations in November. Music is all about. Our local village of Grand Fond, has a fascinating history, the people are always excited to meet new visitors, and it is an interesting and welcoming place to visit. Each year every village has its own feast, a time for eating, dancing, singing and folk traditions, and there are annual celebrations for Independance, Carnival and the World Creole Music Festival.
The Carib Indians and The Carib Territory play an important role in Dominica. The 3000 inhabitants of the reserve are descended from the island's original inhabitants, and are the last remaining tribe of Carib Indians in the world. |
